C&P 5.0.1 vs. Mac OS 10.2.5

12:12pm Apr 25, 2003 PST (#1 of 10)

Ever since updating C&P to 5.0.1 several (but not all) of my Mac OS 10.2.5 users are not able to access our database. C&P tech support stated that I need to start managing the database from a Mac 10.2.5 machine to make sure the permissions stay the same. This is not impossible but not very easy either as I am the sole IT person in the office with 12 Windows XP, 10 Mac OS 10.2.5 and 2 Mac OS 9.2.2 with a Windows 2000 Server. Obviously, I come in from the Windows side. Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions? Thanks,

we all use C&P 5.0.1. all our users are on OS 10.2.4 and our server is OS 9 and we have no problems. all our users are set up as registered users for the OS 9 server and must connect with their user name.

we have heard that OS 10.2.5 is NOT a good upgrade, so we haven't done that yet. perhaps that is the problem.

What does it mean to "manage" the database from a 10.2.5 machine?

Are they asking you to host the database on OS X instead of Windows 2000?

Are they asking you to switch all (some?) of your XP users to OS X?

Are there certain database functions that should be performed over the network from a 10.2.5 machine, instead of sitting in front of the server to do them?

If 10.2.5 can't connect to the database, how can you use it to manage the database?

We moved the database to a Dell NAS. No problems since.

Since you are running some users on 9.2.2 with your Win2K server, I am assuming that you have Services for Macintosh running on your server.

In that case, be sure that you connect to the database using 10.2.5's AFP file sharing, not SMB (which is the Windows simulation). On our network I've given the Mac and Windows shares different names (although they are physically the same volume) so 10.2 users can make this distinction.

Let me know if this does not clear up your issue.

We have the same problem. 1 Win98 user, 1 WinXP user and 2 Mac OS X users. The server is running Win2k. The Mac people connect through Mac OS X's built in Samba. Using 10.2.4 everything is fine. When we upgraded to 10.2.5 the Mac people could only open the DB if nobody else had it opened and this also locked anyone else from using the DB while they had it open. This has not changed with 10.2.6. This is caused by some change Apple made and I alerted them to it the day 10.2.5 came out. I was hoping that it would be fixed when I saw 10.2.6, but it's not. I suggest staying at 10.2.4.

I am hosting a C&P database on Mac OS X Server 10.2.6, running C&P Pro 5.0.1, with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.2.6 clients. We were having problems when the drive hosting the database was named "C&P Database", once we changed the name to "cp_database" everything started working fine. C&P appears to dislike spaces or unusual characters in a file name or directory path.

We have an issue where all Macs can get in, all WinXP can get in but when you log in W2K machines, only 3 can log in and then all others cannot. Keep getting "database unreadable" and "Error when executing procedure STARTUP/55 update or delete command without a read/write file" and "unable to open file" messages.

Well, the pain and trouble is back. I was able to fix the problem originally by connecting to the server with the Max OS X (10.2.5) buy using AFP instead of SMB. Starting on June 30th, I started noticing error reports in the Applications Log on the Win2K server related to AppleTalk. I removed the Protocol and the Services for Macintosh and then reinstalled them. The Mac's were able to connect to the server and the C&P database just fine up to that point. Now I am no longer able to connect to the correct share using AFP, it keeps dumping me into the UAM Volume. Not sure if I am using the proper syntax (afp://000.000.000.000/ ) because this usually fails with either a 5000 or 5019 error on the Mac. If I drop the sharename then I just log normally in to the UAM volume. If I understand Microsoft's intent with the UAM volume, it is just an authentication procedure and that you should be able to navigate the server and share(s) after that.

Let me know if you have any ideas how to get these back up and running. Current problem is the same that I listed above...all XP machines can get in but if even a single XP machine is in then no Macs can get in, if one Mac is in then no other Macs can get in. Error message states that "The database is not avaiable" and closes out C&P.

I have a new Dell400SC Server running W2K3; 9 PCs running various versions of Windows; 6 Macs running versions from 8.(something) to OS X. Problem: The PCs open the .DF1 just fine - the Macs can log onto the server, move the .DF1 to the Mac hard Drive, move it back again, but when trying to open it in C&P, get two different errors - Startup/27 & 43, (depending on if using DAVE software or not). The wording is: "File is not available" or "File is not accessible". I tried opening the .DF1 on a PC from the Mac and get the same error. The .DF1 opens just fine when it is moved the the Mac hard drive. I have read volumes of related Microsoft Knowledge Base and Mac info. I have modified Shares, Security & Permission policies, and given "full control" to the folder and file. I am stuck & accepting ANY ideas. If anyone has a similar setup that is working properly and is willing to do a walk through of my system set-up by phone - I would be VERY appreciative.
