Designer / AE Billing Rates

11:57am Mar 20, 2001 PST (#1 of 4)

I would love your input on a quick and dirty formula for the billable rate for your designers and AE's. Do you use 4x the cost rate?

Thanks,

Natalie Gerngross

We use 3x the cost rate for all staff.

We try to focus on what rate is "sellable" based on market value. We then do a 3X formula to ensure we are above that as a minimum. If we can get more, all the better.

Note: We are focusing on blended staff rates for tasks. So our staff 3X formula might have a range due to junior and senior staff performing the same functions, but we base our minimum on worst case scenarios, using our senior staff rates to ensure we sustain optimal rates.

We use this to calculate an hourly billing rate:

All staff member's annual costs (salary, benefits, bonuses, social security match) divided by 2000 x 3.5.
