Charging Clients

08:27am Sep 12, 2000 PST (#1 of 15)

I was wondering if any of you C&P users can help me with something not C&P related. We are trying to come up with a price to charge clients for color prints. I'm not sure what the industry standard is, but it would be helpful to learn what other agencies charge.

Thanks,

We checked with the local printer..such as Kinko's, etc. and charge a comparable price if it is part of a job package. We figured it was better to do it that way instead of the client wanting to out source it to someone else.

We charge an initial cost of $7.00 for original printouts and .50 each after that, that covers the rip time on the computer

We charge our clients for each "batch" of color copies we print for a job. We charge them as follows:

1st letter copy - $20 Additional letter copy - $6/each

1st ledger copy - $25 Additional ledger copy - $8/each

Transparencies are $25 each.

I as well have no idea what the standard is, but we charge $10.00 each. Slightly higher for larger than standard size paper.

We charge $9.95 for 8-1/2 x 11 and double for 11x17. If that helps.

We charge $8 for 8 1/2 x 11 and $11 for 11 x17. We roll up the cost on the estimate under a task called proofs and materials (clcs and disks)

We charge out color lasers at 5.00 each or 3.00 each for over 10 copies. I'd be interested to see the standard as well. We basically guessed basing our figures on the quick print shops such as alphagraphics.

We just went through this and came up with a combination of what it cost us and what it would cost them to have a Sir Speedy type do color copies. We went for one charge rather than charge one price for letter size and another for tabloid size. We use as our "cost" $5/page and then, depending on the client we mark-up anywhere from 10% to 35%. This is less than they would pay outside, but it more than covers our costs.

We charge $11 for 8.5x11 and $22 for 11x17. We also charge $5 for "off the glass" copies. Hope this helps.

Earlier this year I analyzed what it costs us to print color proofs. I took the purchase price of the color printer plus estimated maintenance amortized over a five year life plus estimated consumables, toner, paper, etc and divided it by estimated # of prints made per year. The cost came out to about $1 per page. We mark them up 100% to $2, but we charge the client for every print made on the job. Whether it's for designer use, proof or comp. The hardest part of our system is getting the designers to write down the color prints they make!

I recommend that you go through and calculate your costs, so you know what it costs you to generate the prints, then you'll know what to charge.

If we run a color copy that the client doesn't see (to check the colors, etc.) or for a final folder copy we charge $8 for an 8 1/2 x 11 & $12 for a larger copy. If it is a copy that the client sees, for a presentation, vendor copy, etc. we charge $15 for an 8 1/2 x 11 & $20 for a larger copy.
