We are currently conducting a reconciliation of our fixed asset general ledger to our depreciation worksheets and are looking for ideas on how to keep track of additions/retirements as well as serial numbers.
Do you create an Excel worksheet or do you have forms that are to be completed with each addition/retirement? Any feedback and/or samples you could give us would be appreciated.

I use excel. The files are getting enormous! I tried looking for an inexpensive fixed asset software program ("off-the-shelf") but couldn't find one.
I do a quarterly reconciliation to the G/L. I keep depreciation book basis for financials, so my spreadsheets also calculate straight-line depreciation. I'll send the file to your e-mail address.
Another thought on this: I'll bet C&P could develop a great module to their software to track fixed assets. The algorithms aren't that hard...
How about it C&P? Have you ever thought about doing this?

We keep an excel spreadsheet to track the fixed assets. This spreadsheet includes asset, retirement date, dollar amount, etc. The serial numbers are kept on another excel spreadsheet document. The serial numbers are tracked by our IT employee and then given to accounting for filing/information purposes.

Until C&P comes up with a module, you may want to try Peachtree Complete Accounting Plus Time and Billing. The corporate rate for the software is between $200 and $250, and there is an integrated Fixed Assets module included in the package. You could also ask your outside accounting firm for suggestions. Our accounting firm keeps track of our fixed assets as part of their services. Hope that helps.

We've considered developing a fixed asset feature for Clients & Profits. If your interested in this feature please e-mail me directly and when we decide to research it further we'll let you know.

We are currently taking an inventory and setting up a database for our fixed assets. We will be using Access. We looked at a software called Soft Q but it didn't meet our needs. Adding this component to C & P would be great.

FileMaker Pro has an asset management template with fields for serial numbers and location, effective date, cost etc. It also depreciates. Check it out www.filemaker.com
