CA Sales Tax

03:09pm Feb 26, 2004 PST (#1 of 2)

We are an agency based in California. I have been struggling with this problem for a long time now, and still at a loss. If anybody can possibly help me, I would greaty appreciate it.

We ship product to multiple counties in CA and WA. Including counties with different sales tax rates. Often, on the same invoice we have 4-5 different county rates. C&P only allows for 2 sales tax rates. Is there anybody who has the same problem? And how did you solve it?

Our idea was to setup a separate group of tasks and list different counties in that group, and manually calculate the taxes per item. That also means that we would have to make all of the other tasks as untaxable. However, there are a few problmes with that -

1) We won't be able to use the sales tax report margil to pay taxes. 2) When we tried to setup a task debiting a sales tax account, we learned that cGL has to be an income account and dGL has to be a cost account, and there is no way around it. So, we could set up an income account and make a journal entry at the end of each month transfering income to liability account, but that just seems impossible...

We tried to contact C&P a few times about this, they didn't give us any advice that would be useful to us. I refuse to beleive that we are the only company using C&P who ships to more then 2 counties.

This is a cry for help...

Have you talked to Don Wayne? He's a Sales Tax consultant based in the SF Bay Area. His phone number is (925) 472-0990. Email is dnhwayne@pacbell.net. He might be able to help you. He eats sales tax rules for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
